Temple Balls: The Original Solventless Concentrate

Temple Balls: The Original Solventless Concentrate

In the world of cannabis concentrates, where new extraction methods and products seem to emerge every day,  it’s easy to forget that one of the most revered forms of hashish has been around for centuries. Temple balls, the original solventless concentrate, have a rich history deeply intertwined with spiritual practices, cultural traditions, and the relentless pursuit of cannabis excellence. This post explores the fascinating journey of temple balls, from their ancient origins to their coveted status in modern cannabis culture.

What Are Temple Balls?

Origins and Traditional Production

The story of temple balls begins in the mountains of Nepal, where cannabis has been cultivated and revered for millennia. As early as the 1700s, Nepalese charas were regarded as the finest example of cannabis in the world, primarily due to the reputation of the temple ball.

The name derives from their use in Hindu temples, where temple balls were often offered as sacraments to deities–particularly Shiva, the god associated with cannabis consumption.

Traditional temple ball production was a labor-intensive process that required great skill and patience. Nepalese hashish makers would carefully select mature, resin-rich cannabis plants. Then, in a technique known as “hand-rubbing,” they would gently rub the live plants between their palms, collecting the sticky resin that adhered to their skin.

The collected cannabis resin was then meticulously rolled and pressed into a spherical shape. The process wasn’t complete after a single rolling, though. Craftsmen would heat and re-roll the balls multiple times over days or even weeks, gradually refining the texture and consistency. The result was a dark, smooth sphere of concentrated, full-spectrum temple ball.

Rise to Prominence and Re-emergence

As Western travelers began exploring Nepal and India in the 1960s and 70s, they experienced first-hand the potency, purity, and unique characteristics of temple balls. It quickly earned them legendary status among those searching for organic remedies like cannabis. Complex flavor profiles, long-lasting effects, and the mystique surrounding their production all contributed to their allure.

Despite this legendary status, nowadays authentic temple balls remain relatively rare in legal cannabis markets. Several factors contribute to this scarcity:

  • The labor-intensive nature of traditional production methods
  • A focus on newer, more easily scalable extraction methods in legal markets and;
  • The lack of widespread knowledge about temple ball production techniques

However, this rarity has only increased their desirability among connoisseurs and has sparked a growing movement towards recreating and reimagining temple balls for modern consumers.

Evolution of Techniques: Traditional to Modern

How to make Temple Balls?

While the traditional Nepalese temple methods are still practiced and revered in some circles, modern hashish artisans have adapted the techniques to suit contemporary production environments and consumer preferences. Let’s compare the traditional approach with modern innovations:

Traditional Method Modern Techniques
Hand-rubbing live plants Starting with dry-sifted kief weed or ice water hash
Slow, manual rolling and pressing Mechanical pressing and rolling
Natural heating from hands and environment Controlled heating processes
Limited scalability Potential for larger-scale production

One of the most influential figures in modernizing temple ball production was our friend and mentor, the late Frenchy Cannoli. A true artisan and educator, Frenchy combined traditional rolling and pressing techniques with modern extraction methods. He typically began with high-quality dry-sifted kief, which he then carefully pressed and shaped into balls using a series of heating and compression stages.

Frenchy’s approach delivered greater consistency and scalability to modern hashashin, while still honoring the artisanal spirit of traditional temple balls. His work has inspired a new generation of hash makers, including Sweetgrass Botanicals’ own Ben McCabe, to explore and refine these techniques, bringing temple balls into the 21st century without losing sight of their rich history.

Benefits of Temple Balls vs. Other Concentrates

Temple balls offer several advantages over other forms of cannabis concentrates:

  • Longer shelf life: properly made temple balls can be stored for extended periods, often improving with age, like fine wine.
  • Versatility: temple balls can be enjoyed through various methods, from traditional smoking to modern dabbing.
  • Purity: unlike many modern concentrates, temple balls are made without the use of any solvents, appealing to those seeking the purest cannabis experience.
  • Flavor and aroma: the gentle processing methods help retain delicate terpenes, resulting in complex and nuanced flavor profiles.
  • Artisanal Appeal: each temple ball is a special creation, reflecting the skill and care of its maker.

Chemical Transformations and Their Benefits

The production and aging of temple balls involve several beneficial chemical transformations:

  • Decarboxylation: The heating process activates cannabinoids, converting THCA into psychoactive THC. It makes the product more potent and bioavailable when consumed.
  • Terpene Preservation: Gentle heating and pressing help retain volatile terpenes that might be lost in more aggressive extraction methods. This contributes to the complex flavor and entourage effect.
  • Oxidation: Over time, some THC converts to cannabinol (CBN), potentially enhancing relaxing effects and contributing to the unique character of aged temple balls
  • Homogenization: Repeated pressing and rolling create a uniform product where cannabinoids and terpenes are evenly distributed, ensuring a consistent experience.

These chemical changes contribute to the unique effects, flavors, and long shelf life that make temple balls so prized among cannabis connoisseurs.

How To Consume or Smoke Temple Balls

Temple balls offer numerous pathways for people to consume, with a variety of popular methods. Each presents a way to experience the full spectrum of effects and flavors that temple balls provide.

  • Crumbling a small piece into a traditional pipe or chillum for a classic experience
  • Using a concentrate-compatible vaporizer for a cleaner, more flavorful hit
  • Heating a small portion on a dab rig for an intense, immediate effect
  • Making a “hash-hole,” where a thin tube of hash is placed in the center of a joint that melts the hash along with the flower for an extra-potent experience
  • Vaporizing: the hash is vaporized between two heated knives
  • Decarboxylated temple balls can also be incorporated into various recipes for those who prefer edibles

The Future of Temple Balls

As the cannabis industry continues to evolve, we’re seeing a renewed interest in traditional forms of hashish, like temple balls. Artisanal producers are experimenting with combining old-world techniques with new technologies, creating products that honor the past while embracing the future.

Some innovative makers, including Sweetgrass Solventless, are starting to use live rosin as the starting material for temple balls to deliver an even more vibrant terpene profile and fuller representation of the fresh plant’s characteristics.

While authentic Nepalese temple balls may remain a rarity, their influence on hashish production and cannabis culture continues to grow. As more consumers seek out full-spectrum, solventless, artisanal cannabis products, temple balls, and their modern interpretations are poised to capture the imagination of a new generation of enthusiasts.

Combining history, culture, and cannabis craft, their journey from the mountains of Nepal to modern artisanal hash-making is a testament to the enduring appeal of this singular cannabis concentrate. As the original solventless concentrate, they remind us of the rich traditions behind consumption and the timeless appeal of carefully crafted, 100% pure cannabis products.

So whether you’re lucky enough to have tried an authentic temple ball in Nepal or developing a taste for their modern re-interpretations, you’re experiencing a piece of cannabis history – one that continues to evolve and inspire.
